Barnplans: On The Road

Ellensburg, WA

We left Seattle and headed 110 miles East across the Cascade Mountains to the town of Ellensburg, WA and the home of Dr. Andrew Jenkins, Phd. and his wife, Gretchen.

Andy's not only a professor of Community Health at Central Washington University and mighty fine barn builder, he's a certified Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician and "climber" for the Central Washington Mountain Rescue team....what a guy!!!

Andy, with the help of his family and friends, built his "Dream Barn" over the Summer/Fall of 2001....you can see the whole story in the November '02 "Barn Showcase" feature.

Well, Andy said, "C'mon....I gotta show you something!" So we jumped into his pick-up and tore out through the back roads of Ellensburg to look at some old barns of the area. We visited the old Dominion Farm Gambrel Barn built in 1901....they sell antiques and crafts on the weekends.

We saw the Broadmoor Farm three story "bentwood" truss barn painstakingly refurbished by Jeff Brunson in 1989, sporting a brand new roof.

Perhaps the most curious and unique thing about the local barns was the way the old builders terminated the eaves with this "wrap-around" return....most of the barns we saw had this!

My favorite, however, was the old Sabin-Walton barn out on Badger Pocket Road. It was built around 1910 and is presently owned by Don Ozanich.

Andy and I had a real blast spending the afternoon driving all over creation checking out old barns....just a couple a barn kinda guys, I guess!!! Alas, it was time to move on....but not before we presented Dr. Andrew Jenkins, Phd. with the BarnPlans Barn Buildin', College Teachin', Mountain Climbin', lost guy rescuin', old barn knowin', Good Luck Horseshoe Barn thingy!! See ya again soon, Andy!
